It is essential — nerves, connective tissue, energy production all need it — and it is also the mineral I most often find at the centre of a confusing chart, precisely because its number can look reassuring while its behaviour is anything but.

Copper does its jobs while properly bound to transport proteins, chiefly one the liver makes called ceruloplasmin. Producing that protein depends on healthy adrenal signalling. When a body has been running depleted for long enough, the liver under-produces it — and copper with nowhere to bind piles up in tissue while the enzymes that need copper go unserved. The strange result: a person can be storing too much copper and functionally short of it at the same time.

A very low reading is often not a simple deficiency but copper that has stopped moving — stored, unavailable, unreadable. A high reading can be elimination in progress rather than fresh exposure. Copper rebalancing is not a copper-pill question in either direction. It runs through the unglamorous fundamentals — supporting the stress-handling system so the transport proteins come back, keeping zinc adequate, and retesting on a normal cadence to watch direction rather than chasing single readings. Slow chemistry, patiently steered, is the whole method.
