Before I held any patents, I spent twenty years as a nuclear quality engineer. People assume those are two different lives — the regulator and the inventor, the rule-follower and the rule-breaker. They are not. Nearly everything I know about inventing, I learned inside a nuclear plant’s quality program, and I have leaned on that training through every one of my sixteen patents.
Here is what that world actually teaches, and why it turns out to be an inventor’s education in disguise.
Lesson One: The Root Cause Is Never Where the Symptom Is
Quality engineering is professional skepticism about easy explanations. When something fails in a nuclear plant, you are not permitted to fix the symptom and move on — you trace the failure back through every contributing condition until you find the root, because a symptom patched is a failure rescheduled.
Invention is the same discipline pointed forward. A good product is a root-cause analysis of a problem nobody has solved properly. When I design wellness equipment, the question is never “what do people ask for?” — it is “what is actually failing underneath the thing they complain about?” The products that last come from the second question.
Lesson Two: A Confident Number Can Still Be a Useless Number
Quality work taught me that measurement is only as good as its collection. A calibrated instrument reading a badly taken sample produces a precise, confident, useless answer — and those are the dangerous ones, because they look exactly like good data.
Inventors meet this trap in testing. It is painfully easy to test a prototype in a way that flatters it: the ideal user, the ideal conditions, the demonstration that always works. The QE in me insists on the opposite — test the way the product will actually be used, by people who did not build it, in conditions that do not cooperate. A prototype that survives honest testing is worth patenting. One that only survives friendly testing is a liability with a filing fee.
Lesson Three: If It Isn’t Documented, It Didn’t Happen
Nuclear work runs on the audit trail. Every weld, every inspection, every deviation is recorded, because the burden of proof never goes away.
Patents run on exactly the same principle. Dates, drawings, iterations, failures — the inventor’s notebook is an audit trail, and the discipline of keeping one is identical to the discipline I was paid to enforce for two decades. When people ask me where to start with an idea, my first answer is unglamorous: start writing it down, with dates, today.
Lesson Four: Tolerances Are Where Products Live or Die
A specification is not a number — it is a number with an allowance. Quality engineers live in those allowances: how much variation can this part carry before it stops doing its job?
Every physical product I have brought to market was shaped by that question. Materials vary. Manufacturing varies. Human bodies — the thing wellness equipment must fit — vary most of all. Designing for the middle of the range is how prototypes succeed and products fail. Designing for the edges of the tolerance is how something survives contact with a thousand different households.
Lesson Five: Process Is What Makes Creativity Repeatable
The romantic story of invention is the flash of insight. I have had those flashes, and I do not trust them until they have been through the process: define the problem, trace the root, prototype, test honestly, document everything, revise the tolerance, test again. That loop is not the enemy of creativity — it is the thing that turns one lucky idea into a shelf of working products.
Sixteen patents later, I have never once regretted the twenty years of discipline that preceded the first one. If you are carrying an idea around, you do not need a laboratory or a title. You need a notebook, a date on the page, and the willingness to test your idea the way an auditor would — hoping it survives, but checking as though it won’t.
